Kids for a Cooler Planet are working to expand our successful reusable bag project across both New Hampshire and Vermont. We are working with our state legislatures to pass a resolution in early 2008 which would encourage businesses to sell and promote reusable bags and encourage consumer education on the benefits of reusable bags and the environmental problems with disposable bags (see legislative initiatives).
We are planning to do our part to help promote reusable bags. We have been working with the Dartmouth College Education Department on a unit on plastics and reusable bags for elementary age children that is currently being piloted by school teachers. This fun, imaginative unit help children learn about the problems with plastics and how their families can do their part to help the environment. The unit will conform to state curriculum standards and will be available for teachers to download in early 2008.
We are also preparing a public service announcement with another kid’s service organization, “Change the World Kids” (Changetheworldkids.com) which will help make people more aware of the environmental problems with disposable bags. We are hoping to involve many different kids from across our states in this project.
